Royal Mail is trialling a service under which its staff will be prepared to leave home delivery consignments with a neighbour if the intended recipient is not available to receive them.

Although a number of carriers offer this service as a matter of course, it has never been an option for Royal Mail, since the organisation is expressly forbidden to do this by its legal obligation to deliver to the specified address.

We understand that the system is being trialled in two areas, and if successful could be extended nationwide by this Christmas. Initial indications are promising; it is reported that 44 per cent of previously undeliverable items are being delivered successfully, and the overall success rate has risen from 88 to 92 per cent.

Recipients have the chance to specify whether they want to take advantage of the system, and if so, how. Early experience suggests that nine out of ten recipients like the service. The key, according to Royal Mail, has been getting the right paperwork system in place.
