DPD is to stop charging for text alerts telling consumers when to expect a delivery. Chief executive Dwain McDonald says he expects the move to increase take-up by retailers.

The Predict service, which was launched two years ago, gives customers an estimated one-hour time delivery slot to save them having to wait in unnecessarily for a delivery. McDonald says it has already generated £50 million of extra revenue for DPD and Interlink Express.

Whilst the service has been available as standard across the board, up to now there has been a charge of 10p per text message to retailers taking advantage of it. This is now being dropped.

McDonald has said the cost could be half a million pounds, and says DPD needs to see a 1 per cent improvement in first-time delivery success to pay for it. "It’s a risk," he admits. However, Predict has already been responsible for an improvement of 10 per cent nationally, and up to 38 per cent in one case, so he considers it a target that can be achieved.

Customers receiving the message are given the option to rearrange the delivery on a different day.
