A new solution for managing in-store picking of products for e-commerce despatch has been launched by JDA Software. The company says it aims to meet the needs of retailers who want to develop a "buy anywhere, fulfil anywhere and return anywhere" strategy. JDA claims it is a unique, differentiated offering.

JDA In-Store Picking accepts e-commerce orders from order management systems and then allocates and clusters them to allow picking and processing at a time when these processes cause minimum disruption, taking account of the store’s size and cycle of activity through the day.

For grocery retailers, the picker may choose either voice activation or browser-based devices to pick products for packaging on to trolleys or carts. The trolleys are then marshalled into staging areas before being loaded for their destined finishing point – whether home delivery, "click-and-collect" store areas, or the "drive-through" models that JDA sees as a growing phenomenon in mainland Europe.

For non-food retailers, the system also processes customer e-commerce orders that may have been picked in another store or distribution centre and are to be picked up in-store. JDA says this enables such retailers to consider a reduced stockholding across their entire store and DC footprint, rather than increasing safety stock in-store to allow for e-commerce allocation.
