In a move that some initially dismissed as an April Fool’s joke, Canada Post is phasing out home mail deliveries and replacing them with deliveries to "community mailboxes". The scheme is expected to be rolled out in phases over the next five years. Cost saving is said to be the reason.

Not all deliveries will be suspended. Those living and working in main downtown areas of big cities could retain their deliveries, and the explicit intention is to retain deliveries to businesses in these areas, and to communal mailboxes in apartment buildings. Deliveries to mailboxes at the end of rural driveways should also survive.

However, for others in smaller towns, deliveries will in future be made to mailbox banks. The organisation is currently consulting with individuals and communities about the best place to locate these facilities.

Whilst Canada’s geography presents unusual challenges for mail delivery (it is a very large country with a very sparse rural population), people in many other countries will be watching this development with concern, wondering if they could be next to lose doorstep mail deliveries.
