TNT Post, the UK-based subsidiary of PostNL (formerly the Dutch postal business) says it plans to double the size of its London workforce, starting with the hiring of 400 postmen and women (or "posties", as it insists on calling them) in Camden, Willesden, Colindale and Harrow.

It has also recruited 500 posties in the Liverpool area, and says its workforce has grown to 3,000 in under two years. In addition, it has extended its operations to south-west London and Manchester, and says it intends to establish a nationwide delivery network for households across the UK by 2015, creating 20,000 jobs within five years.

The organisation claims to be the UK’s second largest private postal operator after Royal Mail, and already provides an end-to-end mail delivery service to businesses and consumers in central, west and south-west London from twelve delivery units. Every letter is scanned, and a track and trace service to the door is provided.

TNT Post’s UK operations date back to 2003, when it launched a "downstream access" service (in which mail is injected into the Royal Mail system for final delivery). However, the new offer removes this reliance, handling the whole process and providing final delivery by employees on bicycles.

TNT Post no longer has any connection with the TNT Express business, and PostNL is in the process of rebranding some of its former TNT operations on the Continent, but it is not clear how it will eventually brand the UK operation.
